jumpingstump 26 & 29

In many ways, these bikes have  their roots back in the 70’s, when “Hercky” Cushing and I used to ride our bikes in the woods after school. We rode them pretty much everywhere else too, but crashing down a hilly, rocky wood road was FUN.  I had an old Columbia 26” newsboy that my father bought in the late 60’s for a short-lived commuting effort. I took the fenders off, turned the handlebars upside down, pumped the tires up hard, and went for it.  One time, coming down “the mountain” I ran wide, hit an old stump, and got launched into the raspberries. If you’ve ever landed in a patch of wild-raspberries, you’d understand why I still remember this some 30-odd years later.

Our homage to the classic, all-around hardtail XC bike. Or should we say “soft-tail”?  The characteristic resilience and shock-absorption of wood laminates make for great off-road riding qualities.  Wood composite bikes are great for riding in the….woods (OK, I had to say it).

The JS 26 mates these characteristics with the nimbleness of 26” wheels. The JS 29 is designed to bring together MTB handling characteristics with the rolling attributes of 29”/700 c wheels. Disk brakes standard. Both are available in single speed/hub gear or derailleur configurations.

On 29‘er’s: We’ve always been fans of riding 700c  (“29”) wheels in the woods. This became apparent when John started riding his ‘cross bike in the woods more often than his 26” shock-fork MTB, at one point squeezing on a set of Panaracer 45C Smoke tires.  In our experience, the larger wheels simply roll better over the relentlessly rocky and rooty roads of our area.
