Co-Founder Sam Kelley is the quintessential craftsman. Among many skills he brings professional production expertise and a love of wood from his background as a master timberframer, custom furniture and woodworking craftsman and designer.  Sam has been involved professionally and academically in environmental education, sustainable agriculture and green building for more than 20 years.  Sam also has tremendous strengths in bringing people and communities together; he actively supports local food and local economy and has been putting legs to his words since walking across country on the Great Peace March in 1986.  Sam is a fanatical backcountry telemark skier and will be pushing Sylvan ski R&D this winter.  He lives in  the bucolic hills of western Massachusetts where he gardens, dances, cooks and goes on adventures whenever possible.

John Coull

To many of you in the bicycle world, John Coull needs no introduction. John knows the bicycle industry from the inside-out, having owned and operating the legendary Valley Bicycles for nearly three decades. In the business development community, many of you know John for his work as the past President of the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce.

John is great fit to the Sylvan team, not only because of his obvious history with the bicycle market, but also because of his long-standing engagement with socially-responsible business practice. John was one of the few business-people whom I saw back in the 1980's who actively and regularly put these practices into action in meaningful everyday ways. It's an honor and a pleasure to have John on our team.

Rui Paulo Fernandes

Materials scientist, engineer and FEA wizard.... Rui developed a love of bicycles in his native Portugal, and earned his “stripes” in the rough and tumble Boston messenger world.  In addition to his entrepreneurial and management skills, Rui brings a heavy dose of “rocket science”.  Rui’s sophisticated FEA modeling of bio-fiber composite materials gives us a deep technical foundation for engineering our bicycles and other products. And did we mention that he’s fun to have a around?
